THE recent Limerick City Enterprise Board Awards 2008, which took place at the Clarion Hotel, saw a host of local businesses awarded for their work.

As part of Limerick Business Week this month, guest speaker Garry Walsh of Green Isle Foods was also present to give local firms a unique perspective on business in Ireland today.

The main crust of his speech to the 140 attendees at the Clarion, was how to survive in the current business climate.

Appointed to the role of Managing Director in October 2007, Mr Walsh has seen the continued development of the Green Isle facilities and people to world class standards since he joined the company five years ago.

Speaking at the Business Lunch and Enterprise Awards event, Eamon Ryan, Limerick City Enterprise Board CEO, said that, “the enterprise awards are a very important part of the Enterprise Boards enterprise awareness programme and that it is important to highlight those businesses that are successful, growing and creating employment in Limerick City”.

Limerick City Enterprise Board this year selected not an individual but a company, BDO Simpson Xavier, Limerick for the Social Entrepreneur award. The award is given to individuals or companies who apply entrepreneurial qualities of innovation and risk-taking to promote a more inclusive society.

The award for Best Service Business was presented to Melissa O’ Brien, one of the founding members in 1999 of Limerick Printmakers Studio and Gallery.

Best New Business award sponsored by Ulster Bank went to Michael Garry of Arbor-Care Professional Consulting Tree Service.

Business with Best Growth Potential award was presented to Greenseal and was sponsored by FAS Mid West.

Having reached Ireland in the search for a cleaner greener lifestyle, David Nicholson decided to set up an eco friendly insulation company, Greenseal Sprayfoam Insulation, an energy efficient product that saves on energy costs for the home, while also being free from formaldehydes and harmful CFC gases. Greenseal’s client base was originally intended to be Ireland but has now expanded to Northern Ireland and England.

John and Myra Long of Readsland Ltd. received the Best Manufacturing Business, sponsored by Enterprise Ireland.

An engineering company set up in Limerick in October 1985, Readsland Ltd. manufactures engineering products, press tools, jigs and fixtures, sprockets and mechanical gear wheels.

Limerick City Entrepreneur of the Year Award for 2008 went to Sallymills Bakery.

As the overall winner, Sallymills is definitely a recipe for success. A family-run business, Sallymills Bakery was set up in 2004 by Nora McGillicuddy and David McCaffrey.
