Ambitious future plans for Limerick city have been outlined in a new free magazine for consumers and businesspeople, launched last week by Mayor Ger Fahy.

Among the projects is a multi-million euro regeneration plan for the Milk Market that will put a roof on the space and develop it into a “six-day market with daytime and evening attractions”.

The Market Trustees will soon lodge a planning application and it is hoped that the project would be complete by September 2008 barring any objections or delays. The ambitious plans aim to rejuvenate the area and guarantee its future.

City Matters also revealed plans for the opening of City Central in Bedford Row in December along with an outline of a landmark development for Thomas Street.

City Central—on the corner of the Marriott Hotel building on Henry Street—will include a range of shops and a new eatery run by respected local restaurateur, Ronan Brannigan.

The Thomas Street development will use the pedestrianisation of the area with a landmark corner building and retail units.

The magazine also outlines the wide ranging City Centre Strategy, which attracted over 40 responses and suggestions by different parties, and an artists’ impression of what the area could resemble in the next decade with the projected €60 million investment..

City Manager Tom Mackey also contributed and said that Limerick is set to become a “gateway city”.

“As a city we have achieved a lot in recent years. It is no time for complacency. We need to constantly strive to make our city more successful. In the city council we are looking forward with confidence to facing the challenges and opportunities of the future.

Mayor Fahy said that City Matters is sponsored by Limerick City Council to promote the best that Limerick has to offer its citizens.
