HAS your home furniture become grey, drab, or lost in a time warp of traditional styles? If so OBJEKT in Newcastle West is where you can go to inject a modern contemporary and colourful design where once there was frump.
Aoife Hayes and her team of professional interior design minded staff travel from Newcastle West to European cities every year to select the finest in European furniture and home living design.
“We’re open two years now. The idea for the business came about because I couldn’t find the furniture I was looking for myself. I went to the furniture sales in Europe and brought back what wasn’t available in Ireland,” Aoife Hayes explained.
After graduating as an Interior Architect the 28-year old Castlemahon native soon found the perfect site to start her modern furniture business, close to home.
“Our main advantage is that we have a showroom of 8,000 sq ft. All our stock is laid out on a massive floor area so people can see for themselves all the products we have on offer. You can come in and sit down on our armchairs or sofas or even lie down on our rugs if you want,” she laughed.
Aoife and the OBJEKT team of Sandra Cosgrave and Marie Bunworth have one main aim, to provide, without fuss, unique furniture items for people in this country.
“The OBJEKT design service will not only help you choose an item of desire for your home but it will also extend to carefully choosing the perfect gift for those close to you or that special occasion.”
With an Interior Architect and Interior Designer on hand, Aoife also encourages customers to bring their plans, sketches, photos and ideas with them and staff would be delighted to advise and assist in choosing the correct pieces to suit one’s style and living spaces.
“We are based on exiting Newcastle West as you travel towards Kerry on the right side of the River Arra. It’s super being on the main road as we have a huge passing trade. We also have a big customer base in the Midlands and in Dublin from people who have holiday homes in Kerry,” Aoife said.
Been so close to the River Arra had never been an issue until earlier this year when it burst its banks following a freak flood. But the situation doesn’t pose any problems according to Aoife.
“Unfortunately we were closed for about six weeks. We had to replace our floors but we opened soon after. It was crazy. I was up all night watching it. But if you had slept through it and woke up the next morning, you wouldn’t have known it had happened as the waters had subsided by then. It’s not a problem- I personally think it was a freak event,” Aoife said.
The advantage of shopping at OBJEKT seems to be its versatile service in that it has furniture to suit large houses right across the spectrum to apartments.
“We have fabulous Christmas decorations too this year. They are from Goodwill in Belguim. Our winter colours are purple, bronzes and pinks. We also have great gift cards, which would make the perfect Christmas present,” Aoife said.
Some of the styles which OBJEKT proudly shows include: Dix heures dix; Ortigia perfumes; Salviati & Murano glassware; and Missoni chairs.
OBJEKT have the cream of the crop when it comes to modern and contemporary furniture and home living styles, but as Aoife confirms, there’s no snobbery.
“The goodwill from people has been fantastic. We get all types of customers and while some people are afraid of modern design, we aim to mix it with traditional pieces too. Sure, we do everything right down to paper napkins for €5,” said Aoife.
