Bank of Ireland Insurance Services has offered assurance to flood victims in Limerick and urged customers to contact its helpline.
Eamon Slevin, Managing Director, Bank of Ireland Insurance Services, also offered the following practical advice to people who have unfortunately suffered damage to their homes or businesses as a result of the recent flooding. “Do not use your electrical or gas supply until it has been checked by a qualified tradesperson; take photographs of the damage to your building and contents because these may help with the settlement of your claim and once the flood water begins to recede, open all windows as soon as the weather permits ensuring your home and valuables are secure,” he said. “Drying your possessions too quickly may cause them further damage so allow them to dry gradually where possible. Resist the temptation to place them directly on a source of heat, which could pose a fire hazard; if the damage is severe and the individual needs to move to alternative accommodation, the cost is covered under the insurance policy and do not throw away ruined possessions as they will need to be assessed.” Mr Slevin added that floodwater may be contaminated with oil, sewage, plants or by animals and urged customers to be careful what they touch and look out for signs of pollution.
“Do not redecorate your home; it can take weeks for a flood damaged property to fully dry out,” he added. |
