The company—based in Clarina—was set up in 2000 by Maurice O’Carroll and has grown to become one of the leading haulage outfits in the mid-west region.

The latest addition to the fleet of five is the biggest truck and crane vehicle in the south of the country.

“There are two of them in Dublin but this is the only one of that size and scale in Munster. It has a 100 tonne crane with a 27ft reach as well as a four axel truck. It was custom-built; it was assembled in Ireland but a lot of it came from Sweden and work was done in Tullamore and Stradbally. It was actually ordered two years ago. It took that long but now we have it, it’s a really unique machine that offers great use,” he said.

“The benefit is that you can combine the functions of a truck and a crane, saving you from having to hire a crane separately. You can move and lift at the same time. All of our vehicles are specialised and range in size as well as type—such as rigid and arctic—and capability, from 20ft bodies to 140ft bodies. We’re confident that we cover a multitude of different jobs. We provide the driver, the trailer, the truck and the crane—everything you need basically.”

The company has a range of equipment and add-ons tailoured to the job at hand.

“We have portakabins, containersand extendable trailers from 40ft to 100ft. If a job requires a maximum lift in a tight spot, we have a machine to do that. Our lorries have cranes ranging from 37 tonnes to 55 to 72 and now 100 tonnes. It’s all very specialised haulage and there really is not job too small or too big.”

Maurice also believes that it is important to be hands-on and still works day to day as a driver.

“We have six staff—five drivers and one person in the office. I still drive myself; I’ve been doing that for years. I worked with O’Brien’s Cranes, which is a well-known and respected company. I prefer to be involved in driving rather than being in the office. We have a very experienced and hardworking staff here and they are also well-trained certified drivers who are very safety conscious.”

Maurice said that diesel fuel is one of the biggest expenses for his business and the area is also very competitive but his business is well-equipped to meet these challenges.

“We have built up a great customer base and it’s very loyal. That’s why the business has grown the way it has and now we are also offering a bigger and better service too. We do a lot of work with construction companies in Limerick and are well-known and trustworthy,” he said.

“One high profile job we did recently was that we brought in sections of the roof for the new Thomond Park rugby stadium. It was a huge operation; we were moving 16ft wide loads. We worked with Foynes Engineering on it with the help of the Garda and the local authorities. It was great to be a part of that bit of history.”

O’Carroll Haulage travels all over the country for jobs and all tasks are considered.
