Buinesses in the City and County are gearing up for Limerick’s first-ever hosting of the All-Ireland Corporate Games, this weekend, June 20-22.
Tow thousand competitors, volunteers and staff will take part in the event, which will be the first of five years that Limerick will be hosts, after Shannon Development secured the deal earlier in the year. Speaking at a photo call to mark the arrival of the Games in Limerick, Mayor of Limerick, Cllr Ger Fahy said: “The people of Limerick are sports mad and are all very proud of the high profile sporting culture we are known for throughout the world. We are delighted to be hosting an event that will play host to so many companies and clubs from all over Ireland and the UK.” “These clubs are hoping to win medals, have fun and make new friends in our city and county. I’d like to welcome all the athletes and the organisers to Limerick and hope they have a time to remember,” Mayor Fahy added. John King, Director Heritage and Tourism, Shannon Development, who secured the Games for Limerick for an initial five-year period, welcomed the benefit to the region of playing host to such a high profile event.
“Coupled with the economic benefits comes the fantastic opportunity for Limerick to showcase itself as a natural home for major sporting events to an audience drawn from all over Ireland as well as the United Kingdom. The event promises to be a great success and I’d like to wish all those competing the very best of luck for the weekend ahead,” Mr King added. With UK participants joining teams from Dublin, Cork, Galway and all over Ireland the event promises to bring colour, craic and competition to Limerick for the entire weekend. In addition to the Games themselves, the weekend kicks off with a registration event at the SuperCentre in the UL Arena between 6–10pm on Friday, June 20. A parade of participants will also march from Arthur’s Quay Park to Clohessy’s on Howley’s Quay at 7.15pm on Saturday, June 21, which will be followed by a street party. The closing ceremony will take place at Hilton Limerick on the Sunday evening.
Local businesses and sports clubs who are participating include: Dell; Dave Sheahan Group; Limerick Fire Brigade; Limerick Regeneration Board; Grant Thornton; Limerick City Council; Limerick Independent to name but a few. |
