The upgraded ParkMagic product, was officially opened by Mayor of Limerick, Cllr John Gilligan as a new and improved version of Limerick City's pay-by-phone on-street parking service began on July 1st. Those behind the service said it represented a further simplification of its in-car parking display unit, which has already proven to be a huge success on Limerick City streets. The newly launched parking system will be made available free to all Limerick car owners. The upgrade involves replacing the electronic battery driven display with a barcode window sticker, a new FREE-PHONE parking number (1800 30 30 93) and a starter pack with Û5 free parking credit. ParkMagic said that the pay-by-phone on-street service will be cheaper than the paper parking disks as the company is running a summer promotion where it will be Û1.80 per parking event instead of Û2 as per the new disks. Free starter packs will be distributed to all car owners in the Limerick area during the month of July. Speaking at the official launch of the new parking service, Rory McDermott, Limerick City Council Traffic Department, expressed his satisfaction and support for the development. "This ParkMagic upgrade offers the people of Limerick even more convenience and comes on the back of a solid pay-by-phone user base in the city. Everyone in Limerick is entitled to use this wonderful service and we plan to give all car owners a free pay-by-phone starter pack," Mr McDermott said. "The provision of a free-phone number should encourage the further adoption of the mobile phone based system. Traffic management in Limerick City is of huge importance, as well as keeping the city's arteries clear, it's vital we give Limerick City drivers and visitors an easy way to pay for their on-street parking," Mr McDermott added. "Once you receive your free starter pack, you register by calling a free-phone number and affix the barcode sticker to your car windscreen. Thereafter, to park your car you call the free-phone parking number for Limerick City. You can top up your parking credit by phone, online or through participating retail outlets citywide. Traffic wardens can check the validity of your parking by scanning the barcode on your window sticker," said ParkMagic. According to the company, the new system has the added advantage of reducing the waste generated by the more traditional paper-based scratch disks, which are only valid for one parking transaction.
