Limerick firms interested in exploring innovation as a means of becoming more competitive are urged to take a closer look at the new Design Shannon Skillnet programme, which tees off this spring.

The two year programme (2008–2009) is funded by member companies and the Training Networks Programme, which is an initiative of Skillnets Ltd.

The programme will run concurrently in Limerick and Ennis, according to Laura Maye, Network Manager at Design Shannon Skillnet.

"Design Shannon Skillnet represents a great opportunity for established manufacturing and service businesses–small and large– to benefit from the insight of leading national and international experts in the areas of design and innovation, and from the experiences of the other member firms in the network," she said.

"The addition of more customised, one-on-one training to the new programme will further enhance the tangible benefits for each, individual company participating."

As a participant of the 2006– 2007 Design Shannon Skillnet programme, Andrew Sweeny, Managing Director of Limerick-based Pennywell Industries said that his company has benefited enormously from its participation.

"Mindful of the huge challenges facing indigenous manufacturing firms, we were keen to open our minds to new ideas. The programme's mix of formal and informal learning, and the great opportunities it provided to network with wide-ranging industry experts and businesspeople ensured that this objective was met," he added.

"I would therefore fully endorse the Design Shannon Skillnet programme, particularly for small firms that have big plans."

The overall Skillnet programme is funded from the National Training Fund, through the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment.
