Shannon Airport has welcomed what it called a "significant boost" with the news that Aer Lingus has teamed up with Star Alliance carrier, United Airlines, in a deal that will provide access to and from the west of Ireland for 200 new destinations across the US.

The extensive codeshare agreement will come into effect from November next.

The codeshare will cover the Irish airline's services from Shannon to Boston, Chicago and New York and United Airlines will also sell seats on Aer Lingus' transatlantic services—thereby offering Shannon as a destination from these US cities.

Airport Director Martin Moroney, said that the partnership brings another major US airline to the Shannon market and will also consolidate the Aer Lingus winter schedule there.

"This is very exciting news for Shannon Airport and this region as it opens up significant new markets across the United States, with the alliance ensuring one-stop access to over 200 new destinations in the US," he said.

"This is also particularly timely given the full-onset this year of Open Skies and is another boost following the Aer Lingus deal with JetBlue Airways Corp earlier this year that will allow customers to book a single reservation between Ireland and more than 40 continental US destinations."

He added that both these alliances "are also very much complemented by the recent announcement of the marketing fund for the west of Ireland tourism destination, aimed at stimulating and promoting a strong identity in the U.S., so these deals couldn't have come at a better time".

"This development brings significant marketing benefits to Shannon and its hinterland and raises Shannon's profile throughout the travel industry in the US."
