And so finally… Limerick has done the right thing and honoured Richard Harris. It has taken long enough, and one wonders why, really.

The man never tired of talking about his hometown. Limerick, Munster rugby (and, of course, the obligatory pint of Guinness in Charlie St George’s) was what made the man tick, and he never tired of telling people, wherever his celebrity lifestyle took him.

The one true regret is that Harris never lived to see his statue unveiled, right in the heart of Limerick city on the newly pedestrianised street of Bedford Row, where it will be seen and appreciated by countless thousands of passers-by.

There has been an amount of criticism of the image chosen for the statue, depicting the actor in his role as King Arthur in the classic Camelot. Many are of the opinion that he should have been captured in his trademark long black overcoat, even holding a pint of his favourite tipple.

This is cribbing, and the time for it has long passed. The likes of Cllr Pat Kennedy should be commended for their long, arduous efforts to have one of Limerick’s most famous sons receive his due.

Whether people are familiar with one specific film of Harris’s misses the point. And the legend emblazoned on the statue “Peace Not War” is a timely message to Limerick people of all ages at this time.
