The proposal being prepared by the Cathaoirleach of Limerick County Council which calls for local authorities to be given powers in community policing, health, education and taxes, is a bold one, which should be applauded.

Whether Cllr Kevin Sheahan’s efforts amount to more than a submission to Government, he should be applauded for at least dragging this issue into the central of the local, and hopefully national, political agenda.

Many of the problems and difficulties besetting Limerick and other regions around the country, would, one would imagine, be given sharper focus if the resources were under local control and administration. Alternatively, we’re left with a situation where we hear the same tired old excuses again and again, about approaching Government Departments and being told that such and such an initiative is impossible, due to lack of resources.

It may be a simplistic way of looking at the situation, but it’s certainly an idea which is worthy of consideration.
