It’s difficult to credit that Limerick actually lost this year’s All Ireland Senior Hurling Final to Kilkenny.
The feel-good factor towards the team has been extraordinary, and the reception afforded Richie Bennis and his hurling warriors on Monday evening in the centre of Limerick warmed the cockels of the heart. Tens of thousands of fans brought the city centre to the standstill as they paid tribute to the hurlers, in a stirring reception that would have been worthy of conquering heroes. But there's no incongruity here. Richie and the hurlers deserve our respect and our richest congratulations. They have risen from the status of rank outsiders to the very centre stage of the sport's upper echelons. Criticism there is plenty, but that’s for another time, and frankly, it’s up to Richie Bennis and his backroom team anyway.
Who knows what another 12 months might bring? |
