COUNTY Limerick schoolchildren were given a hands on agricultural experience when Agri Aware’s Mobile Farm recently visited Cappamore.

The Mobile Farm is a primary school initiative that educates school children about farming and food first hand.

The unit contains cattle, sheep, pigs, poultry and a donkey and travels to primary schools all over the country.

Children from Scoil Chaitriona in Cappamore were given educational lessons on each of the farm animals contained within the unit and their role in the food chain.

Mobile Farm Operator, Claire Stack said: “I am delighted to be working with Agri Aware to help to educate primary school children about farming and food’.

“It is amazing that, even in rural areas, the agricultural link seems to be lost and many children are seeing some of these farm animals for the first time today,” she added.

Prior to the event the school was presented with Agri Aware’s free educational resource pack ‘Dig in, Learning About Farming and Food’—which is sponsored by FBD Trust and the Department of Agriculture and Food.

The resource pack contains lessons on Irish farming, cattle, sheep, pigs, poultry, fruit and vegetables, cereals and grasses and healthy eating.
