All the green flag schools in Limerick City were represented and the Mayor complimented the schools’ achievements on receiving their green flags and their ongoing work. Each school was presented with a certificate of merit from the mayor to mark the occasion. There are currently a total of 24 schools flying Green Flags over Limerick City (over 50% of local schools). “I wish to acknowledge and applaud the efforts that our schools are making on behalf of the environment. The Green Schools programme is a voluntary one and credit is due to the schools which take it on,” said Mayor Gilligan. “I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting the schools and I would like to wish them continued success with the Green Schools programme and I would encourage schools who are not already involved to actively join the programme.” The Green schools programme is an international programme that is managed nationally by An Taisce. Local authorities like Limerick City Council are actively involved in promoting the programme locally and its aim is to take environmental issues and apply them to the day to day school life. The programme is based on a series of themes: Litter & Waste, Energy, Water and the recently developed Transport theme. A Green flag is awarded for a successful application on each theme. Around 14 schools have achieved Green Flag status for litter & waste; three schools have two flags (Litter and Waste and Energy) and seven schools have three flags (litter and waste, energy and water). The schools with three flags are now moving on to the new challenging theme of transport. Schools that are interested in getting involved in the Green Schools programme are welcome to contact the city council’s Environment Awareness Officer, Sinead McDonnell, on 061-407190. |
