A TRADITIONAL music group made up of students from Mary Immaculate College launched their first CD upstairs in Dolan’s last Thursday night.

Lóchrann, a group of extremely talented traditional Irish musicians chosen from the student body, launched the album with the help of MC, Donncha Ó Dúlaing, from RTÉ programme ‘Fáilte Isteach’.

Lóchrann was formed in March 2008 and brings together six students—all established musicians in their own right.

They include Eibhlin Healy from Limerick, Aoife Greene and Diarmaid Ó hAlmhain from Galway, Pauric Stapleton and Brian Shinners from Tipperary and Caoilfhionn Ni Fhrighil originally from Dublin.

Between them, the musicians play the flute, guitar, piano, tin whistle, cello, concertina, fiddle, harp, uilleann pipes and bodhrán.

Siobhán Ní Mhurchú, a lecturer in Múineadh na Gaeilge also performs with Lóchrann 2008 as a singer.

The group caused a sensation during their inaugural visit to the USA in March 2008 when they were invited to play as the opening act at a sell-out Saw Doctors concert in the 2500-seat Hanover Theatre in Worcester, Massachusetts.
