Tom Hickey, beloved of many since his days as ‘Benjy’ in the Riordans comes to University of Limerick (UL) tonight, Wednesday, July 23rd to talk on his long career as an actor.

He will speak with hundreds of drama fans, actors and enthusiasts at the Drama League of Ireland summer school at UL.

Held in the Jean Monet Theatre at the University at 8pm, admission is free but booking is essential.

Tom first came to public notice in 1965 when he joined the cast of the long running RTE soap, The Riordans.

He stayed with the role of Benjy for the next sixteen years during which time he endeared himself to the whole population by bringing a real truth and depth to the character of the young Benjy.

Truth in acting was instilled into him in his early years as a Stanislavski actor with Deirdre O’Connell in the Focus Studio.

In more recent time, the playwright Tom Mac Intyre asked Tom to play the lead role in his adaptation of Patrick Kavanagh’s poem “The Great Hunger”.

For RTE, he was seen as ‘Billy’ in Black Day At Black Rock written and directed by Limerick playwright and screen writer Gerry Stembridge. Other film work includes: The Butcher Boy, Double Carpet, Before I Sleep, Gold In the Streets,  ing Stones, The Miracle, Fools of Fortune, Big Swinger, Nuns on the Run, High Spirits, Gothic, Desecration, To The Western World, Cal, Flight of the Doves.

It is an “honour” for the Drama League of Ireland and Quarry Players of Limerick to host Tom Hickey at UL.
