IRELAND’S loudest and most kickass rock combo, Limerick’s very own Giveamanakick, return home from a rip-roaring jaunt to New York to tear up Dolan’s Warehouse this weekend. Comprised of noisemakers Steveamanakick (Stephen Ryan) and Giveamanakeith (Keith Lawler), the pair has been making music together under the Giveamanakick moniker since 2003. GAMAK released their sensational third album ‘Welcome To The Cusp’ earlier this year to rave reviews. Their music has been lavished by critics for being “unapologetically loud”, “intensely barbed” and “viciously precise”. The duo played a host of sold out shows at home and abroad in 2008 including a rapturous set at the Electric Picnic as well as wowing music critics at New York’s prestigious CMJ Music Marathon last month. “Yeah they seemed to have taken to us like bluebottles to a turd in New York. It was the best GAMAK experience thus far without a doubt,” Steveamanakick tells me. “It went amazingly well,” adds Giveamanakeith. “We got a humbling review on popmatters.com, which is one of the three largest music websites in the world. The reviewer just seemed to get it, the way we intend it to be got, which is rare, it was great,” he says. Giveamanakick are hitting the road once again this week to do some shows around Ireland. Having shared stages with rock luminaries from Dinosaur Jr to Ministry, The Rapture, Deftones, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Rocket From The Crypt, The Icarus Line and The Undertones, you can expect a truly awe-inspiring and madcap performance from our heroes when they thread the boards at the Warehouse this Friday. A s always you can expect plenty of ear shattering guitars, coronary inducing drumming, a self deprecating sense of humour and a disturbing use of gas masks. “We’ve been playing a lot this year since the album came out, so you can expect an extremely tight intense show, with a mix of our old stuff and new stuff. And a Beastie Boys cover too!” frontman Steve announces. “It will be classic GAMAK at its loudest, no frills and maybe some fire, maybe. We’ve been really busy outside of Ireland for the last while in the US and Europe, its been brilliant. Can’t wait to play at home though,” his fast-drumming sidekick interjects. The Limerick noiseniks are also planning on releasing ‘Brittle Bones’ – a Led Zeppelin-esque monster ballad that will send shivers down your spine – as the next single from “Welcome to the Cusp’ in January 2009. ‘Brittle Bones’ reveals a mellower and dare I say, more mature sound than we’ve come to expect from the incendiary rockers, but fear not, they are not going MOR on us! “Well, we’re working on new ‘interpretations’ of some of our songs at the moment. We’re playing them acoustically, but we’re not pulling back on the intensity in any way. It’s not unplugged really, just a different approach. We won’t be toning anything down though. Not one thing!” promises Steveamanakick. “We hope to release ‘Brittle Bones’ come January, and we’ll be doing radio and press and the like, but we’ll also be doing gigs around then too. We’ll also be setting ourselves on fire in the Peoples Park on St Patrick’s Day,” he jests! Putting us back on track, Giveamanakeith steps in quickly and says, “We’re just working on the video at the moment, it’s going to come out in early January. So we’ll be back on the radio and telly for a bit around then, you wont be able to avoid us!” “Lately we’ve been gigging and gigging, in true GAMAK fashion. New York, Berlin, Mullingar... We’ll be doing some recording next month too. Then we’re releasing the single, pushing it, then going to Canada in March for Canadian Music week, which we found out last week we’ve been invited to play! Sweet!” Steve proclaims. “Yeah, it seems like Irish bands are going there in their droves these days! Vesta Varro, Walter Mitty, Fred. We have to find out what the attraction is, maybe there’s a good pint to be found out there or something! says Keith. Anything else we should know guys before ye dash back to the rock’n’roll lifestyle? “Yes, Keith has six toes on his left foot!” Steve boldly divulges. You can do a toe count for yourselves if you don’t believe it when Giveamanakick take to the stage at Dolan’s Warehouse this Saturday, November 15 with special guests Adebisi Shank and Shield Your Eyes. Doors open at 9pm and tickets cost €9. |
