Limerick-based Rwandan artist Jean Ryan Hakizimana is drawing on African and Irish inspiration for the collection of paintings he is unveiling in the city over the St Patrick’s Day holiday weekend.

‘Afro-Irish’, a collection of 30 paintings, including landscapes and streetscapes, portraits and mixed-media works, will be unveiled at the Basement Art Studio in the Augustinian Church, O’Connell Street, on Saturday March 15 at 3pm.

Sean Hickey will perform the opening of the exhibition, which features all new work, a compilation of paintings inspired by African and Irish subjects.

Aland Assiri will provide live violin music at the opening of the exhibition, which is being held in association with Dora Luimni and the Augustinian Order.

Jean Ryan Hakizimana was born in 1976 in Rwanda, where his talent at painting and drawing became apparent from a very early age.

Now living in Limerick for the past five years, Jean, on a voluntaly basis, provides art workshops for Doras Luimni, and is acknowledged as one of the best and most sought-after artists in the area. His paintings have been sold all over the world.
