ALABAMA 3 roll into Limerick this Christmas with their Southern-fried blend of gospel, punk, blues, pop and country techno for a very special acoustic and unplugged gig at Trinity Rooms on December 28.
Renowned for their exhilarating live performances all over the globe, Alabama 3’s acoustic show brings a whole new dimension to songs such as ‘Ain’t Goin’ To Goa’, ‘Woke Up This Morning’, ‘Mansion On The Hill’, ‘Up Above My Head’ and ‘U Don’t Danse To Tekno Anymore’. Alabama 3 Acoustic and Unplugged is a four-piece outfit featuring Larry Love and Devlin Love on vocals, Rock Freebase on guitars and Harpo Strangelove on harmonica. And as the band says themselves, “this isn’t acid house music, this is country/gospel/delta blues, but played with a rhythm you’ve still got to dance to”. “We sit down on stage to perform these songs, which we feel allows us to hone in on the more sensitive aspect of what we are doing. The audience hears these great songs written by Alabama 3 in a clearer light, and can really appreciate the strength of Larry’s lyrics, as well as the great musicianship of Rock and Harpo,” says vocalist Devlin Love. By performing in this stripped down acoustic way the band’s aim was to show the songs in a format reminiscent of the people that have been their inspiration, chiefly the old Delta Blues players like Fred McDowell and Bukka White. “Billie Holiday, Bessie Smith, Little Jimmy Scott, Mahalia Jackson, Sister Rossetta, have all been strong influences for me in the acoustic shows, not just in voice, but in performance and emotion. Females singing the blues with soul from the 1930s to 1950s is what I’m aspiring to with these gigs, which matches well with Rock’s Mississippi Fred MacDowell style guitar,” Love explains. The acoustic shows that have won a devoted following in the UK, have recently reached out to a whole new audience with a mini tour of Australia last November and a enthusiastic reception from audiences at SXSW in Texas earlier this year. In March Alabama 3 Acoustic and Unplugged played by special invitation of the governor of Brixton Prison for the charity ‘Jail Guitar Doors’. Don’t miss this special Christmas show at Trinity Rooms on Sunday December 28. Tickets cost €20 and are available from Empire Music and other Ticketmaster outlets nationwide. |
