AL Pacino is certainly picking some stinkers at the moment. After tedious cop thriller ‘Righteous Kill’ where he stars alongside old pal De Niro, Pacino now turns up in ’88 Minutes’, one of the dumbest and most embarrassing movies of the year. With a wonderful bouffant hairstyle and looking like he’s just been tangoed, Pacino sleepwalks through every scene; obviously happy in the knowledge that he can buy that new yacht he’s had his eye on of late.
Directed by Jon Avnet, Pacino plays star forensic psychiatrist Dr Jack Gramm who profiles serial killers for the FBI. Murdering psycho Jon Forster aka the ‘Seattle Slasher’ (Neal McDonough), awaits execution and tells the media that Gramm is responsible for sending him to the electric chair. Next thing one of Gramm’s students turns up dead and he gets a call telling him he has 88 minutes to live, which is the first big joke of a movie that is 106 minutes long! However, while Forster prepares to meet old sparky, a copycat killer is at large on the streets of Seattle and Gramm who obviously believes he’s a cop and not a psychiatrist gets busy to solve the case before his 88 minutes are up. Pacino prances around the city’s backstreets with a Fanta-tinged face and his hair sticking up in the air as a whole list of possible suspects are introduced in a silly ‘Scooby Doo’ fashion. The whole thing is downright ridiculous and about as thrilling as a dose of the trots. ’88 Minutes’ is one of the cheesiest psychological thrillers of recent years. It clunks along vapidly and by the time we find out whom the killer is our interest has completely waned after having to sit through such drawn out nothingness! Pacino has made some stinkers in the past, but this is a new low. ’88 Minutes’ is probably the worst film this legendary actor has ever starred in. It’s truly appalling! (1/5) |
