A NEW production of Bizet’s ‘Carmen’, in a grand amphitheatre setting, will be staged at the University Concert Hall on Friday November 7. Directed by Ellen Kent, the amphitheatre setting will be designed by London designer Will Bowen, a theatre consultant working with the Royal Albert Hall, Soho Theatre and the National Theatre. This production of ‘Carmen’ premiered at Leeds Castle, Kent, in front of an audience of 6,000 people this summer. UCH will be transformed next month into a Spanish spectacular reminiscent of the real bullrings in Spain with international Flamenco dancer Sam Quy, last seen in the Royal Opera House’s production of ‘Carmen’. With bull fighters and a brass band parading through the concert hall this is a performance that brings a new and stunning twist to Bizet’s famous and seductive opera. Performed by a large company starring handpicked international soloists alongside the full Chisinau National Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus, this is an Ellen Kent Amphitheatre presentation not to be missed by opera lovers of all ages. The story of the bewitching gypsy girl whose tantalising beauty lures a soldier to desertion and leads to her own murder, this opera includes some of the most evocative and best-loved melodies in opera – ‘The Habanera’, ‘The Seguidilla’, ‘The Flower Song’, ‘The Chanson Boheme’ and ‘The Toreador’s Song’. Sung in French with English surtitles, ‘Carmen’ comes to UCH on Friday November 7. For further information or bookings call 061-331549 or log onto www.uch.ie. |
