SCOTTISH DJ, producer and singer Calvin Harris plays an exclusive Irish date at Limerick’s very own Trinity Rooms on Sunday October 26.

The 24-year-old one-man-party’s debut album ‘I Created Disco’, which was released to great commercial and critical success last year, is a mix of electro infused dance tracks that take their influence from eighties synth pop, LCD Soundsystem and Daft Punk. With a slew of hits singles under his belt including ‘Acceptable In The 80s’, ‘The Girls’, ‘Colours’ and ‘Merrymaking At My Place’, Harris’ Limerick date later this month promises to be an absolute corker.

Calvin Harris is one of those ‘myspace sensations’ you keep reading about. He was wildly popular amongst the kids and on the club scene, a cult producer-slash-singer-slash-bedroom-knob-twiddler who can make the most banging pop-dance tunes out of nothing. The last time he spent any money on gear was three years ago, when he bought a voice processor for £200.

I’m not the kind of dude who buys Sound On Sound. I know if something sounds nice. If it does, I’ll keep it. If not, I’ll try and make it nice. You don’t need to splash out on technology,” Harris says.

Calvin Harris’s debut album, with the subtle title ‘I Created Disco’, cost nothing to record and was a Top Ten hit in the UK album charts. He fashions future-disco using an ancient Amiga computer and a stonking live set using MDF and 204 samples.

The song titles say it all. My tunes aren’t supposed to invoke deep thought within people; they’re just to get you dancing. But musically it is for the brain - it’s not music for stupid people. I take great pride in my productions. It’s not knocked out in a few seconds,” he explains.

Harris produced two tracks on Kylie Minogue’s ‘X’ album. He is credited as being the producer in a remixed version of The Mitchell Brothers song ‘Michael Jackson’ and is currently working with British popstar Sophie Ellis-Bextor, co-writing songs for her forthcoming album. He also collaborated with UK rapper Dizzee Rascal on his track ‘Dance Wiv Me’. The song was released digitally in June this year and went straight to number one in the UK.

Disco disappeared, didn’t it? Everyone got sick of it. Now I’m reviving it, with space goggles, or something,” Harris concludes.

Catch Calvin Harris at Trinity Rooms during an exclusive Irish date on Sunday October 26. Tickets cost €16 and are available from The Clubhouse, Empire Music and Ticketmaster outlets nationwide.
