Limerick County Council paid tribute to veteran journalist Arthur Quinlan and the 2007 Limerick Senior Camogie Team at County Hall this Monday with the coveted honour of a civic reception.

Mr Quinlan was honoured for his career in journalism, which has spanned over fifty years, while the camogie players and their mentors were credited for winning the county’s first ever Senior All-Ireland Championship title last month.

Speaking at the ceremony, Cllr Kevin Sheahan, Cathaoirleach of Limerick County Council, said that a civic reception is “the highest accolade at the disposal of the local authority for any individual, group or organisation”.

“Those who are being honoured are being formally recognised not only for their outstanding achievements but their position as role models for others in their respective fields,” he added.

The Limerick Camogie team took their first ever Senior All-Ireland Camogie championship title after beating Cork in the Gala All-Ireland Senior B decider at Páirc Uí Rinn last month.

Congratulating Arthur Quinlan, the Cathaoirleach described his professional integrity as the “cornerstone of his success”.

“If one week is a long time in politics, then over fifty years in journalism must seem like an eternity. Yet for Arthur, he never lost sight of his duties as a journalist to seek truth and provide a fair and comprehensive account of events and issues. More significantly, he never lost his passion for reporting.”

The former Irish Times reporter is the only western journalist to have interviewed Che Guevara.
