Fables Restaurant at the Unicorn Bar has become the first restaurant in the mid-west that allows the customer to bring the wine of their choice with no corkage fee in a bid to disprove the label of 'Rip Off Republic'.

Fables Restaurant at the Unicorn Bar in Dooradoyle, Limerick has truly been a favourite for more than half a century for good food and drink among locals and visitors alike.

As the slogan on the menu goes, Fables enjoys "serving great food and drink to friends, old and new". Now it has hit the right note with the first BYO (Bring Your Own wine) restaurant in the mid-west. General Manager Bryan Greene said that he first saw the hugely popular idea in action in New Jersey in the US.

"I asked for a wine menu in a restaurant but they had none," he recalled.

"The waiter said I could cross the road to the local off license, buy one and bring it back. I thought this was such a great idea and I promised I would do the same in Ireland."

He added that he believes that it's a fantastic idea, particularly with the massive numbers of Irish people drinking wine at home, on holidays or in the pub.

"When they go to a restaurant they are restricted to the type of wine that's on the restaurant's wine list, which may not suit," he said.

"At Fables, you can bring the wine of your choice and let us do what we do best—the food. And obviously with everything being so expensive people like to get great value for money."

Fables Restaurant is coupled with the popular Unicorn Bar in Dooradoyle and is open daily from 5pm to 10pm (closed Wednesdays).

The 'early bird' menu is available daily from 5 pm to 7pm.
