“Mary had been in ‘Noah And The Towerflower’, which won Best New Play Award at the Irish Times Irish Theatre Awards last year. For this role, she is actually a bit young, but Sebastian changed around a few things with the script, because she was just too good,” notes Jim. Jim reckons that ‘The Pride Of Parnell Street’ deals with “love, loss, forgiveness, and dealing with incidents in your life”, yet he reckons there is an element of black humour central to it: “Absolutely. It deals with very dark issues, but I still think that it is very funny and life-affirming along the way.”
“It was more of a coincidence really, as we were set to do it here as part of the Dublin Theatre Festival. This was our fifth time going to Tricycle Theatre in London, and we’ve built up strong links with them, so it was really by chance as another show had cancelled. By time, the Dublin Theatre Festival had come about, we realised that a great buzz had been generated from the London shows.” While there are advantages, Culleton also sees “logistical problems” in using this method again, but does readily admit that it was “worth taking the risk and opportunity this time around.” Since their run at the Tivoli in Dublin, Fishamble have started bringing ‘The Pride Of Parnell Street’ around the country, garnering great responses everywhere. Next stop is Limerick, when they kick off next Monday at The Belltable.
‘The Pride Of Parnell Street’ runs from Monday, May 26 to Saturday, May 31 at The Belltable, O’Connell Street. Tickets priced €16-22.50 are available from the Box Office at 061 319866. More information from www.fishamble.com |
