MERCURY Prize-nominated singer Fionn Regan returns to Limerick for a show at Dolan’s Warehouse this Saturday, March 6 to celebrate the release of his new album ‘The Shadow of an Empire’.
The follow-up to Regan’s critically-acclaimed debut ‘The End of History’ was recorded in a small, disused factory space in his hometown of Bray in County Wicklow.
And not only is Fionn back with a new pageboy haircut but he has also taken a new departure with his music, moving away from his more delicate folk balladry to a livelier, electric Bob Dylan-tinged sound.
‘‘There was no airs or graces about it, we cut it live in the room with live vocals,’’ Regan reveals.
‘‘I'm very much into keeping mistakes, a crack in the voice, the natural ebb and flow of live drums, so that there’s a sort of evidence of the process. I think it’s that atmosphere which makes me want to revisit my favourite albums again and again,’’ he adds.
‘The Shadow of an Empire’ is a collection of vitriolic songs that are peopled with characters and conversational dialogue. Often witty vignettes such as ‘Protection Racket’, ‘Coathook’ and ‘Lord Help My Poor Soul’ are used to facilitate more complex soul-searching. The Irish singer claims the record was influenced by the works of Jack Kerouac and Francis Bacon.
Catch Fionn Regan live at Dolan’s Warehouse this Saturday, March 6. Doors open at 8pm.
