Fiddle player with much-loved Irish act The Frames, Colm Mac Con Iomaire, stops off at the Belltable on September 5 as part of a tour to promote his debut solo album ‘The Hare’s Corner’.
Produced by Karl Odlum, Colm’s new album was made over a two-week period in a mobile home behind his house in County Wexford. ‘The Hare’s Corner’ was recorded earlier this year during a break from touring with the Oscar-winning ‘The Swell Season’ fronted by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova. “I have for many years been recording little instrumental pieces here and there, always intending someday to make a record of my own. Early in January when the extent of my touring schedule with ‘The Swell Season’ became apparent, I realised that I had a window of a month in March/April to finally record the album or postpone it for another year,” the 37-year-old musician explained. “I called my old school-mate Karl Odlum and got him on board to record the album with me. Over and effortless and extremely enjoyable two-week period, the album was recorded in a mobile home behind my house in County Wexford, so that I didn’t have to spend another extended period away from my family,” said Mac Con Iomaire. “I ended up playing a lot of the instruments on it myself including harmonium, banjo, bouzouki, guitars and cello, because it just seemed handier that way. Karl played some bass and I invited some other musicians in to play piano, trumpet, drums and harp. It felt great to be finally giving these little ideas of mine some attention,” the Frames star told me.
“The Hare’s Corner was the corner of a field left uncut by the farmers of yesteryear at harvest time so that the hares would have a place to refuge. It just seemed like a nice metaphor for an album of diverse instrumental pieces,” Colm concluded. Colm Mac Con Iomaire of The Frames will take to the stage at the Belltable on Friday September 5. Doors open at 8pm and tickets cost €18. For further information or booking contact 061-319866. |
