ENGLISH post-punk four-piece The Futureheads visit Dolan’s Warehouse on Tuesday December 17, following an impressive performance at Kilkee’s Cois Fharraige festival back in September. The Futureheads first shot to fame as part of the UK’s ‘angular’ new-wave movement, which included bands like Bloc Party and Franz Ferdinand. Influenced by the likes of Devo, Fugazi, Queen and The Jam, the quartet took its name from the title of the Flaming Lips record ‘Hit to Death in the Future Head’. The Futureheads released their self-titled debut album in September 2004. Andy Gill of Gang of Four produced five tracks on this record and their music has since been described as energetic, witty, and cheerful in style. In February 2005, ‘Hounds of Love’, a cover of a Kate Bush song, was released as a single in the UK charts. It reached Number 8 in its first week. It was named best single of 2005 by NME. The band recently toured the US and later supported the Foo Fighters on their most recent UK tour. Their new album ‘This Is Not The World’ has been lauded for brimming with “defiance, optimism and joy”. Annoyed and frustrated too many times by the bureaucratic nightmare that music had become, the band split with former label 679 in late 2006. A silently busy year followed which saw the band writing and recording, and launching their own label Nul Records, solely to release music by The Futureheads. Free of major label shackles, the band are taking back control and relishing being their own bosses. ‘This Is Not The World’ was recorded in three weeks in the summer with super-producer Youth at his studio ‘Space Mountain’ in the Sierra Nevada mountain range in Andalusia. About as far away atmospherically as you can get from the bleak Scarborough farm in which they recorded ‘News And Tributes’, the band couldn’t help but be influenced by Youth’s enthusiasm. To coincide with the Futureheads’ upcoming Irish tour they have announced the digital release of new single ‘I Wouldn’t Be Like This If You Were Here’. These dates follow on from sold out shows worldwide to re-establish their status as one of Britain’s best punk-pop bands. The Futureheads play Dolan’s Warehouse on Tuesday December 16. Doors open at 8pm and tickets cost €17. |
