HAM Sandwich, one of Ireland’s hottest new bands, will show their support to Amnesty International by playing their ‘Small Places Tour’, which stops off in Dolan’s Warehouse on Thursday November 20.
The concert marks the sixtieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which promises equal liberties and the right to justice for men and women the world over, and is part of a series of gigs around the globe by musicians who are dedicating their time and talent to raise awareness about human rights. Inspired by Eleanor Roosevelt’s call for ‘concerted citizen action’ in her famous “small places” speech in 1958, musicians and fans will raise their voices in song and action in venues, cities, towns, communities, neighborhoods and workplaces. Through hundreds of concerts held around the world, Amnesty International will draw attention to urgent human rights concerns, recruit thousands of new human rights activists and raise much needed funds for Amnesty campaigns. Almost 30 gigs are already scheduled across Ireland in the lead up to International Human Rights Day on December 10 and Ham Sandwich will perform in Limerick as part of this global music and human rights tour. Hailing from Kells, County Meath, Ham Sandwich were presented with the ‘Hope for 2008’ Meteor Award. Their debut album ‘Carry The Meek’ entered the Irish charts at number 23 and remained in the Top 40 for four weeks. The quintet are now set to release their seventh single ‘Broken Glass. Their songs are mostly inspired by relationships deteriorating to the point of blossoming with someone else and many early ideas for songs such as ‘Sad Songs’ and ‘Heartbreaker’ were penned while band member John Moore worked the graveyard shift in a dilapidated psychiatric hospital. Their unique sound is built around the dovetail vocals of Niamh and Podge flying against a sky cloudy with catchy yet intricate guitars. “Lush”, “emotional,” and “effervescent” are just a few of the words bandied about by myriad newspapers and magazines in praise of Ham Sandwich. You can catch them live at Dolan’s Warehouse on November 20 and show your support for Amnesty’s human rights initiative. All proceeds in aid of Amnesty International. |
