FORMER Beautiful South and Housemartins man Paul Heaton will delight Limerick fans with news that he has just scheduled a show in the city next month.
Renowned for his wry observational lyrics, Heaton’s solo career continues to conjure up fresh pop gems. His current album, ‘The Cross-Eyed Rambler’, is a mature and refreshing collection filled with new songs that build on his enviable lyricism and are sure to wow the crowd at Dolan’s Warehouse on Friday November 14. The man responsible for writing such hits as ‘Happy Hour’, ‘Caravan of Love’, ‘Rotterdam’, ‘Don’t Marry Her’ and ‘Perfect 10’ is one of Britain’s best-loved lyricists. First coming to widespread attention as frontman with The Housemartins, it was with his second group, The Beautiful South, whom Heaton would become most associated with. Formed at the end of the eighties, the band went on to sell 15m albums worldwide before splitting in January 2007. The Beautiful South’s greatest hits collection ‘Carry On Up The Charts’ was one of the biggest selling albums of the nineties. Heaton’s latest solo effort ‘The Cross-Eyed Rambler’ is the 14th album of his career and his first release proper as a solo artist. For the first time since 1986 and the birth of The Housemartins, Heaton has stripped his sound back to a basic four-piece band. Combined with a bagful of new songs, ‘The Cross-Eyed Rambler’ is an album full of the familiar and the genuinely surprising. The album is a showcase for the diversity of Heaton’s song-writing talent, from the pop wizardry of ‘Mermaids And Slaves’ and ‘Good Old Fashioned Town’ to songs such as ‘The Ring From Your Hand’, ‘The Pub’ and ‘Little Red Rooster’, where Heaton’s words begins to sound like an Alan Bennett of his day. A true lyrical genius, Paul Heaton is not to be missed when he plays Dolan’s Warehouse on Friday November 14. Doors open at 8pm and tickets cost €20. |
