An exhibition of paintings by Limerick artist Nuala O’Sullivan—‘picture spaces’—is on display at the Gallery Space in the Dooradoyle Library from March 6 to April 5.
The exhibition will be officially opened at 7.30pm tomorrow (Thursday March 6). The paintings on show take inspiration from an old family film that dates from the late 1950s and early 1960s and the work evokes memories of childhood summers during that time. The colour used in the paintings is reminiscent of colours associated with the period and by using many thin layers of paint the surface finish of many of the paintings also echo the origin of the work—the old celluloid film. This is the first solo show by Nuala O’Sullivan—who completed her Fine Art Degree (Painting) in Limerick School of Art and Design in 2006—having returned to college as a mature student. Selected work has featured in shows in the Hunt Museum, Limerick Printmakers Open Selection 2006, the Hallward Gallery, Dublin, and the Iontas Small Works Exhibition 2007 in Sligo. She is a member of Contact Studios, a studio group of 14 artists located beside St Joseph’s Hospital on Mulgrave Street.
