"I'd give up laptops in a second if they didn't provide a heaping spoonful of flexibility. Even so I do my best to be as far away from mine as possible. I am quite lucky in hindsight to be using this little invention, a Monome, that this acquaintance puts together. The Monome is like a sampler, sequencer, keyboard times sixteen! Boy, does it change performances, it makes it very possible to do some real improvising." And was this the reason behind his most recent release, 'Live At The Low End Theory'? "The Low End Theory is a wonderful Los Angeles institution which has been harbouring a very local sound, mixing hip-hop beatmakers with electronic artists and live bands (like the Mars Volta), sometimes on the very same evening. It was with this club's mindset that making a live recording became more than an abstract. So, in turn I've released this with hopes that it would encourage other audiences to possibly be more interactive, to ask more of me, and hopefully I can rise to the situation." Limerick audiences will hope he can rise to the situation when he makes his Treaty-city debut this weekend. Before he goes, and considering the title of his first album, it is only fair to ask Darlington if his moniker is somewhat inspired by Joyce? "Joyce is certainly one of the reasons I was inspired to pick this nom de plume. It is not the only, that would be skipping some of Joyce's scattered inspiration so please don't take me too literally. The only other chance I've had in Ireland was a quick gig in Dublin, and I was amazed then to see actual places so famous in print." As for the Limerick gig: "I have high hopes, probably terribly unrealistic ideas of what the night could hold; always shoot for the stars, and then even if we only get to the moon, we are still in outerspace." Daedelus plays a free show at The Cornmarket this Friday, April 11. Doors are at 9pm, and guest DJs include Johnny Doobs, Peter Curtin and John Gough. More info at www.myspace.com/daedelusdarling. |
