Imagine two naked men in a bath on a stage for two hours, acting in a play without a plot and written using one on one improvisation. It may sound ridiculous but it’s more Ridiculusmus- the theatre company bringing the spectacle of Me Time to the Belltable Arts Centre on October 11 and 12.

Two men in a bath… see Ridiculusmus at the Belltable on October 11-12.

Jon Haynes, one half of the London-based theatrical duo, described Me Time as a work that is not just ideas based but a look at the intricacies of storytelling.

“The play revolves around two German characters in a spa in Bangkok and they’re having a long conversation that ranges over several topics including the Holocaust, rent boys and celebrity fixation. There is no plot because the play is more about the stories,” he  said.

“With my character, Martin, you get the feeling that he’s met Stefan sometime before and that he has told him a lot of stories. He wants to make them into a book and Stefan is a writer who jumps at this chance. Martin reveals details about his life but he keeps digressing. It eventually emerges that Martin has had an awful life. It’s all in the details.”

The blurbs call Me Time a “brilliantly funny, furiously paced poetic call to arms”.

According to its writer, it is also about “massacre”- played out in an intimate setting.

Ridiculusmus is continually challenging traditional methods and audience expectations.

“We devise the plays by improvising on our feet and recording the sessions. With this play, we were apart a lot in the two years of development so we wrote parts using email. We’re driven to do something else. If all a play has to offer is what happens next, then what is the point? I think some plays end like a filled in crossword puzzle but our work isn’t like that. The audiences are probably quite disturbed by it sometimes,” he laughed.

Tickets for Me Time are priced at €18 and €15 for concessions and the booking line is 061 319866.
