On top of taking the role of 'Edward', Kevin also is charged with directing this production. So, just how arduous is it to balance both? "I've found that really difficult in terms of man-management. I have to be very careful as a director on how I handle ideas, and make sure that I listen to the other actors, and take on board their ideas." Kiely is understandably delighted that he will be bringing the play to his hometown, but doesn't feel it will add any extra pressures: "You have to go on stage and forget that there is anybody in the audience, because especially for something like this, the audience has a voyeuristic view. I am very proud to be involved to be bringing it to the Belltable, and to be involved with a company in the nuts and bolts of it, as well as directing and acting." While there are plans to stage the production in Guildford in January of next year, Kiely admits that it will be "put to bed for a while after that", as the company strives to build up its own repertoire with different productions. As for his own future ambitions? "My goal is to work in theatre and film. I don't really care about television because I don't even watch TV; I haven't in the past eighteen months. On the other hand, there is something traditional about going to the cinema to see a film that I love. Also, I really love the process of making film; I got a little bit of experience doing that with RTE before I came to England." For a man who seems to have it all mapped out, Kiely isn't looking too far ahead at the same time. "We'll see how this production goes. Who knows what might happen after that; one step at a time," he says. 'Someone Who'll Watch Over Me' runs at The Belltable from Monday, August 18 to Friday, August 22. Tickets priced €15 (€13 concession) are available from Belltable's box office (061 319866). |
