Jape ![]() The highly-anticipated third album from Jape, a.k.a. Richie Egan of The Redneck Manifesto, is an assured and exuberant collection of songs with a gorgeous pop sensibility that more than lives up to expectations. Blending wonky electronica with sparse and dreamy acoustics, ‘Ritual’ is a captivating listen from start to finish. Ten tracks and not one dud among them, this is most definitely the album that is going to bring the Crumlin native to an enthralled worldwide audience. Wonderfully produced, Jape’s latest offering conjures up inspiring imagery of graveyards, fruit, childhood, and Irish rock legends. Three years in the making, ‘Ritual’ was well worth the wait. This is a record that is going to see the young Mr Egan likened to everyone from Prince to Beck, the Beta Band and LCD Soundsystem for his sublime knack of mixing indie-electronica, dirty disco, scuzzy rock and the sweetest acoustic pop into a heady concoction that makes you want to shake your ass. A massive Irish talent, Jape’s music is accessible, fun, natural and downright bloody infectious. The simplicity of Jape’s sound is what makes it so enchanting. Opening track ‘Christopher And Anthony’ is bouncy and upbeat dance music with oodles of soul. ‘I Was A Man’ is contender for single of the year with its raunchy Rick James machismo, autobiographical lyrics and grimy electro beats. ‘Phil Lynott’ is an astoundingly affectionate tribute, while ‘Nothing Lasts Forever’ is a spine-tingly and highly-emotive stand-out track built on a simple DJ Shadow-like melody. This is a cracker of an album that undeniably confirms that Jape is great! (5/5) |
