THE University of Limerick Orchestra will get in the festive spirit on Saturday December 6 when it presents ‘A Classic Christmas’ at the University Concert Hall. For its annual Christmas concert the UL orchestra brings the dazzling sounds of Tchaikovsky’s beloved ballet, ‘The Nutcracker’, to the concert hall. Including ‘Trépak’, ‘the Arabian Dance’, ‘March of the Toy Soldiers’ and ‘Waltz of the Flowers’ – the Nutcracker’s sparkle and splendour are sure to evoke all the magic that Christmas can bring for the young and the young at heart. Soloists Evelyn Grant (flute) and Jean Kelly (harp), will also grace the stage for a performance of Mozart’s ‘Flute and Harp Concerto’ during this very special concert. Evelyn has been at the heart of Irish musical life for many years, as performer, teacher, conductor, and broadcaster. Well-known to radio audiences, she presents Lyric Lunchtime each weekend on RTÉ Lyric FM and is very active on the Cork music scene. Her daughter, London-based harpist Jean Kelly has established herself as a versatile soloist, chamber musician and recording artist in the UK, Ireland and across Europe. She has collaborated with Katie Melua, James Galway, and The Chieftains and was featured on the ‘Lord of the Rings’ soundtrack. The County Limerick Youth Choir, under the direction of Maire Keary Scanlan, will also offer up a selection of lively seasonal melodies and perform alongside the orchestra in works such as John Rutter’s ‘Donkey Carol’. Further information and bookings is available from 061-331549 or www.uch.ie. |
