While peroxide was first promoted to bleach hair in the 19th century, it was in the 1920s and 1930s that the first ‘blonde bombshells’ were created by Hollywood, with Jean Harlow, Mar West and Veronica Lake hitting our screens.

But it was in the 1950s when natural brunette Norma Jean was told to bleach her hair.

That was when the patron saint of peroxide was born.

Marilyn Monroe hit iconic status as soon as she coloured her hair and the rest is history….

In 1960, Brigitte Bardot became the iconic ‘sex kitten’ of the decade with her tousled hair.

Dusty Springfield’s bouffant blonde beehive became a trademark of the Swinging Sixties.

Moving forward a decade, and in Charlie’s Angels, Farrah Fawcett’s hair was the most emulated style of the decade. Meanwhile, bleached locks made Blondie’s Debbie Harry the ultimate rock chick.

In the 1980s, Christie Brinkely’s Californian blonde hue made her an ’uptown girl‘ while Kim Businger’s  just-out-of bed blonde look made her the stuff of male fantasy in the movie ‘Nine & A Half Weeks’.

In the 1990s, there was Madonna, and that decade saw her continue to try a variety of shades of blonde. But it was Meg Ryan’s crop in ‘Addicted To Love’ that launched a thousand copycat cuts.

Moving up to date in the 2000s, while rock chick Gwen Stefani is the decade’s Jean Harlow brought bang up-to-date, Hollywood starlet Scarlett Johansson is the 21st Century Marilyn Monroe.
