Doras Luimní and Southill Youth Reach are seeking teams and spectators to take part in their International Football Festival on Wednesday August 20 in the Mary Immaculate College sports grounds.

Members of the public are invited to come and enjoy an Irish and African barbecue, drumming and other music and as many nationalities as possible showing their skills and sportsmanship in a sports event "that promises to be exhilarating, exciting and full of fun", according to Doras Case Worker, James Ledwith.

"There are already teams confirmed from Africa, Poland, Afghanistan, Southill Youth Reach, Limerick Youth Service and a team from the community Garda. The response from many hostels and organisations in town has been fantastic and we are still looking for teams to enter. This really will be a very special event in Limericks summer calendar. We plan to have a fusion of Irish, African and International communities, mixing the food, the music and the sporting cultures of all," he said.

"The event will begin about 4.30 in the afternoon and run until about 8pm. Each team will have the opportunity to play at least three times and those advancing from Group A and Group B will play in a semi-final and then a final. The pitch will be lined with flags from all over the world, the costumes and sense of colour and occasion should be felt by all."

Mr Ledwith added that "there is a big family aspect to the festival but we also really want to emphasise the sport element".

"Doras Luimni has been a cornerstone of support and direction for the new communities of Limerick for many years. Its open door symbol reflects the warmth and openness of its staff and volunteers to aid all those who cross their threshold. We hope that this festival will capture the hearts of all those participating and help create a better Intercultural Limerick for 2008," he added.
