You’ve got the killer cut and shiny finish so why is your hair still lacking that sex factor?

Most hairdressers agree that a cut without colour is only half a hairdo but if colouring your hair evokes thoughts of brassy blondes, frazzled ends and badger stripes its time to think again.

Becoming that cool beige blonde, chocolatey brown or blazing redhead is easier than ever, thanks to the latest generation of colorants and techniques that offer luxurious luminous colour to leave your hair positively gleaming with health.

It’s all a matter of following the Colour Rules—Celebs don’t get shade-perfect hair by playing lucky dip in their local chemist but while you may not have the budget for an A-list colourist-on-call you can get your perfect hue with my colour commandments.
Find the right salon and colourist: Look for a salon that offers you the colour you want whether it’s somewhere specializing in a natural more mainstream look or one that offers something more edgy.

Then decide on your colourist. If you can get a recommendation from a friend whose colour you like then great. Book your consultation, otherwise go into your chose salon and speak to one of the more experienced colourists,

If you feel like he or she may not be listening to you find someone else. You’re vulnerable when you’re sitting in a hairdressers chair so you need to trust him or her implicitly.

Get your message across (but don’t forget who’s the expert): Working with your hairs natural colour, your skin tone and eye colour is the starting point for any colour change. Then you need to picture your dream hair colour. When it comes to communicating simply say what you like and most importantly say what you don’t like. Pictures can say so much more than words and will ensure there are no crossed wires so take a couple with you as examples. The other thing to consider is colour doesn’t always have to be drastic especially if you don’t want people playing spot-the-difference with your hair. The secret to modern colour is creating a natural multi-tonal effect that makes your skin glow and your eye colour ‘pop’. Listen to your colourist and feel assured that you’ll end up with the result you wanted. However if you do hate it speak up. Even in the best salons mistakes happen and most colourists will act swiftly to rectify them.

Nurture your new colour: Its simple for good colour to last – you need to take care of it! From protecting it in the sun and in the pool to using the best colour care shampoo and conditioner your budget will allow. Your colour will fade faster than a one-hit wonder if you wash it everyday with the wrong shampoo, dive into the pool without pre-soaking and heat-styling without a protection spray. Why invest in dream colour if you’re not going to look after it? Treat it with respect just like you would your skin, giving it a weekly mask or pampering it with an in-salon gloss treatment in-between colour appointments.
