Diabetes helpWalking for an extra 45-minutes a day could help people with type two diabetes to control the condition better, according to the results of new research. British scientists found that diabetics who did the extra exercise became better at burning fat and over a period of weeks and this helped to control their blood glucose levels. The head researcher said that while going to the gym may be intimidating, walking is a simple form of increasing activity. The University of Newcastle team said the results were "exciting" because there was improvement without any additional drugs. Avoiding green potatoesPotatoes that have turned green can potentially contain a naturally occurring toxin called glycoalkaloids (GA), which could be a risk to public health. The toxins can cause serious illness with symptoms including headaches, dizziness, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, drowsiness, confusion, trembling and hallucination. However, the Indian research found that cutting away the green affected area is enough to eliminate most of the GAs. Breast milk surveyA new study has revealed that the flavours of food eaten by nursing mothers can be found in breast milk. Danish researchers took breast milk samples from 18 lactating mothers before and after they ate samples of caraway seed, menthol, banana and liquorice. Different flavours took different times to appear in the breast milk but all of them eventually appeared. The four flavours had all disappeared from the women's breast milk after eight hours. The scientists said that the results show that you can introduce children to flavours before they eat solid foods. |
