A new initiative to promote “good, clean and fair food by way of supporting local food producers” held its first event in Limerick last night (November 20), much to the delight of local foodies.

The Slow Food Limerick and Region inaugural gourmet dinner cooked up a storm in the Market Square Brasserie and it is hoped that it will be the first of many such events.

Slow Food Limerick and Region is a newly set-up chapter of Slow Food International that also aims to promote good quality produce and support artisan producers and local and/or organic farmers

Limerick chapter founder, Grace Fitzgerald, explained that Slow Food is an international movement that has spread from Italy where it was founded in the late 80s as a reaction against the invasion of fast-food chains.

The movement is primarily voluntary and has spread through the world by interested food communities simply setting up their own local group or “convivium” (meaning vitality) and Limerick is the latest area to benefit from its own group.

“Good, clean and fair food” is the motto of Slow Food and it promotes taking the time out to enjoy good food that is tasty and made from fresh, seasonal and local ingredients if possible.

“Clean food” is not harmful to health or the environment while the concept of fairness ensures that all those working with food produce get a fair price for their work and goods.

Slow Food activities cater for all tastes and types and include any event that celebrates food and its origin.

Future plans for Slow Food Limerick and Region include a traditional ancient banquet in spring, ‘Slow Food:Slow Dating’ for Valentines, a composting and potato varietal tasting day at The Organic College in Dromcollogher, a casual summer spit-roast pig family BBQ, foraging for mushrooms, nuts and berries in autumn, and many gourmet dinners, lunches and tasting sessions.

It is possible to support the movement by becoming a member of the local or another convivium at www.slowfoodireland.com or www.slowfood.com.

All future events will be posted on the Irish site under ‘Local Events’.
