Looking at the amount people received, the largest payment to a person in Limerick was to a man in his mid 40s who has a heart condition and received over €45,000 in income protection from Irish Life last year-having received almost €325,000 to date.

An analysis of its 2008 claims for Limerick showed that mental illnesses accounted for one quarter of the 122 claims paid out.

The second most significant cause of income protection payments was back pain, which accounted for 21% of all claims in Limerick-followed by cancer (12%), heart conditions (10%) and respiratory conditions (6%).

Compared to the National average of 22% for mental illness, Limerick claims are 3% higher but are practically on a par to the national average of 22% for back pain.

James Collins, Area Manager for Irish Life Limerick said that “in the current environment income protection was growing significantly in popularity”.

“Income Protection provides the financial security which allows people to concentrate solely on their recovery and not on worrying that the bills can be paid.”

Irish Life, Ireland's biggest provider of income protection paid out over €52 Million in claims to 3,000 people last year
