Animal lover Pamela Flood and her four-legged friends launch the competition.

The competition—supported by Pedigree and Whiskas—is a celebration of the pets that bring joy, comfort, happiness and unforgettable memories to our lives.

This year's World Animal Week and Best Loved Search competition focuses on the countless benefits that dogs and cats bring to their owners.

The categories include: Best Loved Dog, Best Loved Cat, Best Loved Rescue Dog or Cat and Best Loved Companion Dog (animals that provide specific assistance or companionship to elderly people or individuals with visual or hearing impairments or a disability.

The winners of the search will be chosen based on how well they tell the story of their beneficial, rewarding relationship with their beloved cat and dog.

The judging panel will be made up of members from each animal organisation along with passionate animal lovers, Linda Martin and campaign spokesperson, Pamela Flood.

"Animals are one of my greatest passions so I'm delighted to be involved with Pedigree and Whiskas Search for Ireland's Best Loved Pets," said Ms Flood, who is best known for her television presentation of 'Off the Rails' on RTÉ.

"It's amazing how much our pets can benefit our lives, in our health and socially. That's why the competition is a fantastic idea as it gives pet lovers the opportunity to really celebrate how much they love their feline friends and doggy companions."

Pet lovers can submit their story at www.worldanimalweek.ie to compete for a pet-friendly holiday worth €1,000 and a six-month supply of Pedigree or Whiskas.

The closing date for entrants is August 10 and finalists will be announced shortly after. The public will also have a chance to vote online for the final winners from August 25 while winners will be announced during World Animal Week.
