A recent survey has revealed some of the dental habits of Limerick and findings include the fact that around half of Limerick people suffer from tooth sensitivity on a regular basis.

A recent nationwide survey commissioned by Savodent also revealed that 54% admitted that tooth sensitivity impacted upon their everyday lives and 43% said that the only way to avoid the painful symptoms was to limit their intake of hot or cold food.

Of those surveyed, 50% thought that tooth sensitivity was caused by poor oral hygiene while only 5% more accurately attributed it to incorrect and aggressive brushing.

According to Savodent—which is one of leading treatments for sensitive teeth—over-brushing, fizzy drinks, fruit juices, wine and tooth whitening treatments all contribute to the problem.

The survey—carried out in areas Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Galway—has shown however that a high number of people are ill informed about how to properly care for their teeth as well as to prevent problems such as tooth sensitivity and gum disease.

Only 69% of those surveyed in Limerick brush their teeth the recommended twice a day. This means that almost a third are failing to care for their teeth adequately, and one fifth admit to brushing just once a day.

About 6% surveyed brush their teeth only once a week and a further 4% brush just once a month. Of everyone surveyed in Limerick, 33% revealed they had suffered from gum disease before while 42% of people believed that fresh breath was the most important factor regarding healthy teeth, with bleeding gums rating amongst the lowest for concern.

It is extremely important to get bleeding gums checked out, as this is a sign of gum disease and does not indicate healthy teeth.

Rosanna Davison was voted by local participants as the Irish celebrity with the best smile, commanding 28% of the votes.

Savodent kits to combat the problem of sensitive teeth are available from pharmacies nationwide
