Slow Food Limerick & Region will hold its latest event—a Mid-Summer Supper In The Country—this Friday (June 20) at 7.30pm at the Gallery Restaurant in the Old Stand, Shangolden.

The event is the latest in a series of Slow Food suppers and events by the local convivium, which was successfully set up last November and now has over 70 members.

The aim of the supper set in the lush countryside of the Golden Vale is to offer an evening of exquisite local food for savvy diners who look for the best of good, seasonal, preferably artisan food and steer away from intensively farmed and industrialised produce.

Dishes—which will include options such as tomato and bacon soup, prawns, Limerick ham, local beef, corn fed chicken, fish, fresh fruit and homemade ice cream—will be expertly prepared by executive head chef Behar Hafizi (Ari) in the elegant and relaxed surroundings of the Gallery Restaurant.

Local producers featured include: Rigney's Farm of Curragh Chase, O'Connell's award-winning butcher's in Little Catherine Street, Garret's award-winning butcher in Dooradoyle, René Cusack, Springfield vegetables, Cappagh Orchards, Adare Farms and Cill Mhuire honey.

Convivium leader, Anne Fox, said that the local response has been tremendous.

"The convivium started with three led by Grace Fitzgerald, who was a member in Clare and wanted to start something in Limerick. It has built up a good momentum since then because there is such an interest on the ground. People want to eat out and know what's local and good. Food has moved into the centre of various political agendas and many of us are more conscious of what we eat and why. Slow Food just fits in the current increasing awareness of the importance of food and food politics," she said, explaining that the 'Slow' in the title is a direct reaction to 'fast food'.

"It tries to redress some of the harm done by fast food and fast living. It's a way of doing your bit for producers too. Slow Food is good i.e. healthy, clean i.e. not harmful to the environment or mass produced and it's also fair in that a good price is given for their work and product."

Ms Fox said that Slow Food Limerick & Region is constantly planning and building on its events. "There was definitely a gap for something like it in Limerick and all the chefs we work with are really enthusiastic along with the diners. We've done several suppers, a Slow Dating night and some seminars including one on 'Slow Food for Babies and Toddlers'. We're hoping to have a family fun day in July or August and do more educational outreach work as well." Places at the supper are limited and booking is essential (€30 for members and €35 for non-members).

Call Raza or Mary on 069-60780 to secure your place and for transport details (transport to and from Limerick city will be provided at a small fee for anyone wishing to enjoy some of the fine wines on offer).
