DEBATE surrounding the delay in completion of the new Limerick-Nenagh roadway, part of the M7 motorway project, took a fresh twist this week with some getting the ‘sinking feeling’ that the land the road is being built on, is causing the project a ‘bog load’ of problems.
A member of the public spotted a digger machine that appeared to be slowly sinking in a bog that the road is being constructed on.
Despite further funding having been allocated for the completion of the project, part of the roadway has experienced serious problems the National Roads Authority confirmed to the Limerick Independent.
“The project has been delayed due to a number of challenges. It was originally die to be completed in the middle of last year but it has had significant delays. The bog is a serious problem, but it was a ‘known known’ as we say in the construction industry,” a spokesman for the NRA added.
Our exclusive picture shows the digger machine have buried beside the roadway, which workers are battling to complete.
“The road was due to be completed last year but it may be March or April or later in the year (2010) when it finally opens. It’s 38 kilometres of dual carriageway,” the NRA added.
A spokesman for a company linked to the project said he was aware of a digger type machine having to be pulled out of the bog but that he was unaware of a machine that was currently in the bog.
A spokesperson for the main contractors behind the project could not be contacted at the time of going to press, despite numerous attempts to contact the firm.
