The stark reality of Limerick’s heroin problem has been highlighted again after a used heroin syringe was found on a public footpath in the city centre.

The syringe found in the city this Monday.

It’s the second time in three months that a dirty syringe has been found on the busy streets of Limerick City.

A heroin addict is understood to have dropped the syringe on the footpath after he/she got a ‘hit’ from the potentially lethal drug.

It was found this Monday morning on a footpath between Roche’s Street and William Street, while members of the public went about their business.

While it’s the second time in a few months that used syringes have been found on public footpaths, the streets are said to be cleaned by the City Council seven days a week.

“We have a team of 44 men involved in the overall cleaning of the streets every day. They start at 7am and have the city centre cleaned at around 10am. The city suburbs are then cleaned and the outskirts of town and the estates are then cleaned,” a spokesperson for Limerick City Council’s Environment department said.
