In response to an article published in last week’s Limerick Independent, which indicated that a review of cancer services at Barringtons Hospital was yet to commence, the Limerick Independent has been contacted by the Chief Executive of Barringtons Hospital, Mr Denis Cahalane, to confirm that, in fact, the Review is well under way.
Mr Cahalane has pointed out that quotes, which were published on the irishhealth.com website, and which were referenced by the Limerick Independent in last week’s article, were somewhat dated, and did not reflect the current situation at Barringtons.
According to Mr Cahalane, a substantial amount of the Review Panel’s work is already complete. “I have requested that every effort is made by the Panel to have the work completed by the end of December,” he said. Mr Cahalane stressed that the Review Panel is “completely independent, and operates outside the control of Barringtons Hospital”. “The Panel cannot be directed or influenced by the Hospital on the pace of the Review,” Mr Cahalane said. Referring to the assertion in last week’s article that Barringtons Hospital could ‘veto’ membership of the Review Panel, Mr Cahalane stated emphatically that neither Barringtons Hospital, nor any consultant practising in Barringtons has any right to veto any individual from sitting on the Review Panel. “To suggest otherwise, is totally misinformed,” Mr Cahalane stated.
Mr Cahalane concluded: “Patient care at Barringtons Hospital is the main focus of the organisation, always has been and always will be.” |
