Fresh from the city’s St Patrick’s Day festivities, the Boherbuoy Band will represent Limerick in the 2008 National Championships at the University Concert Hall this weekend.
The band has been rehearsing non stop for the pass few weeks, under the watchful eye of Musical Director, Derbhile De Paor, for prestigious competition on March 29 and 30.
The test piece for the championship is entitled, ‘A Cambrian Suite’ composed by Michael Ball and the choice piece is the well known Folk Song Suite by Vaughan-Williams Chairman Don Phelan said that the band is working hard and “put a lot of time into getting both works to the highest possible standard”. “There is great credit due to all the members of the band who have given freely their time which will include the upcoming Easter holidays for the extra rehearsals and section practices. On behalf of the committee, I would like to say thank you to all the members and our director for the attendance and commitment for all rehearsals,” he said. “The band is very proud to again represent Limerick in this annual national competition, and hopefully achieve the heights reached in 2007—the band is currently national champion in the Concert Section 3 category. The Boherbuoy Band is honoured that the 2008 National Band Championships will be held in Limerick, a first because the event is rarely held outside the Leinster area.” Over 1,000 musicians will compete in the two day event.
Mr Phelan also paid tribute to two of its former members—José Benson and Brendan Campbell—who both passed away recently. “It is extremely sad to see two young men pass away and José was also a former chair man of the band. Our condolences are with their families and friends.” |
