GARDAÍ based in Newcastle West have made an appeal for information
after two hijack-type incidents were reported in West Limerick in one
week, the Limerick Independent has learned. The latest incident occurred on Monday night this week, when three men jumped into a another man’s car which was parked in the Station Road/Lacey’s Cross area of Newcastle West town. The men ordered the driver of the car to take them towards Rathkeale however the man managed to make his escape from his own car after driving a short distance. One man was arrested a short time later by Newcastle West Gardaí, however they are anxious to speak to anyone who may have any information regarding the incident or the whereabouts of those who may have been involved. Gardaí said the driver of the car in question-a 99 blue Toyota Corolla-was left in a traumatised state following the incident. Meanwhile Gardaí are also anxious to hear from anyone who may have information regarding the alleged abduction of a well-known businessman in Abbeyfeale last Thursday morning. The publican who is aged in his 30s is understood to have answered a knock at the door of his house in Abbeyfeale between the hours of 1am-2am last Thursday when he was suddenly confronted by a masked man who was said to have been armed with a gun. The publican was allegedly led from his house and told to drive both himself and the masked man to a location between West Limerick and Kerry known locally as Dromadda, Knocknagoshel-a back road between Abbeyfeale and Tralee, which according to Gardaí, would experience a good level of traffic. After driving a distance of approximately 11 miles, the publican was told to stop the vehicle and get out. “From what we know he as directed to burn his own car, which was a 08 Audi. He suffered burns to his neck and face. He called to a neighbours house and the Gardaí responded immediately,” said Supt Jim O’Connor, Newcastle West Gardaí. The injured publican was brought to Tralee and then to Cork University Hospital but he was later discharged with minor injuries. The publican is originally from the Shanagolden area of West Limerick and is known as a young successful businessman. According to Gardaí, the man who was armed and masked during the incident fled the scene in a white coloured car, which was driven by another person. Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Gardai at Newcastle West on 069-62111 or any Garda Station. |
